Arne Slot announces role of Liverpool manager as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement – “I will become their trainer there”
Arne Slot has said that he is set to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this summer.
The Feyenoord manager used his press conference ahead of his side’s final Eredivisie fixture of the season to make the announcement.
“I can confirm that I will become the trainer there next year,” Slot said.
On the last day of the season, Liverpool will play their final match at Anfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers, under the direction of Klopp.
After almost ten years in command, Klopp declared in January that he would be leaving the team at the end of the current season. Liverpool has won the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Premier League, and the UEFA Champions League under his leadership.
After a stellar season with Bayer Leverkusen, former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was immediately linked as the front-runner for the position. However, the 42-year-old, who is in his first full season as manager, quickly made it clear that he wanted to stay in Germany and lead Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title.
In April, Slot emerged as the front-runner to replace Klopp when reports surfaced of a compensation agreement between the two clubs for up to £9.4 million.
The 45-year-old became manager of Feyenoord in 2021, and in his first season, he guided the Dutch team to their first European final since 2002, finishing second in the UEFA Europa Conference League behind AS Roma.
In his press conference on Friday, Slot added: “Until now I was not thinking about this being the build-up to my last match, but that starts coming now. At the beginning of the week you are thinking about training and those kind of things.
“But the feeling gets stronger now. That is why I’m a little bit late now [for the news conference], because I wanted to say goodbye to some people personally and take time for them, more than just shaking hands.
“I understand that good results help, but it is very nice to feel that people really are thinking it’s a pity that I’m leaving.”
